# Hashtag The Planet is a webcomic written by Brooklyn kid, aka Ann Merritt
Why is it called "Hashtag the Planet"?
"Hashtag the Planet" is kinda like "Hack the Planet" - the slogan from the super awesome, totally badass film Hackers. Hashtag the Planet can also be shortened to HTTP or HTTPlanet which is cool because HTTP, in the internets world, stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web aka www.theinternet.com. That is cool because the internet is awesome.Wait. What is a #/hashtag? I totally don't get it.
The whole #/hashtag craze became popular mostly because of Twitter and today people hashtag all over the place, just for the heck of it. Putting a hashtag in front of something is a way of creating a category or marking a keyword, phrase or topic. For example, if one were to say
i love unicorns! the hashtag that follows might be: #thingsan8yearoldsays ergo, i love unicorns! #thingsan8yearoldsays
See, way back in the day, Twitter users used the #/hashtag as a way of categorizing messages. Here's what Twitter has to say about the hashtag:
"People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search. Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category. Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet. Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics."
They make it sound much more complex than it is. So don't worry if you dont get it.
Just remember: anything can be categorized and thus hashtagged.
so, go! #hashtagtheplanet
